Monsoon on the Ridge

Rain on canvas. Mist in the valley.

July to September on the ridge is green, loud with rain and very quiet otherwise. Here’s the honest version.

The honest ridge

What the monsoon is actually like.

The sound

Rain on canvas is the best sleep you’ll have all year. You’re warm and dry under it.

The view

Some mornings the valley is cloud. Some mornings it clears in an hour. Both are worth waking for.

The leeches

July has them. Long socks, salt, and check after walks. Dogs too.

The road

Slower and wetter. We’ll tell you the day before how it is.

The fine print

Road officially closed? Full credit, valid twelve months, however late you tell us.

The price

Most monsoon nights aren’t peak. It’s the quiet season, and priced like it.

the path down, after rain

Harela, in July

Plant something with the gaon.

Harela is the Kumaoni festival of green, marking the start of the rains. Guests staying around it can plant a sapling with the village.

It’s the slow season. That’s rather the point.
